Local residents at a number of neighbourhoods in Preston and
Chorley volunteered to develop community food growing areas to grow
and harvest a range of fruit and vegetables.
The food growing projects support community cohesion is
supported by the Lancashire Wildlife Trust and
promotes safe access to the natural environment and healthier
lifestyles.
Residents have grown potatoes, strawberries, raspberries,
gooseberries, rhubarb, onions, garlic, and salad crops which have
been shared with other local residents.
Volunteers have also benefitted from horticultural training and
have successfully attracted additional funding to improve the food
growing facilities.
The food growing projects have set up a Facebook page to promote
their work and have submitted a number of applications to the
Britain in Bloom award scheme.
The project also helped to establish residents group through
which will look to provide funding and long-term management of the
project.
