Capital Projects: Astley Village

Astley Village, ChorleyAstley Village, Chorley

Astley Village
in Chorley is a development of 440 homes managed by Places for People. The Green Spaces project saw almost £470,000 invested to provide new public spaces and regenerate existing ones. The work was part of a wider neighbourhood improvement programme that put community involvement at the heart of the process.

The green space improvements resulted from an extensive consultation process with residents. This involved:

  • Community meetings
  • Door-to-door surveys
  • Exhibition of plans in the local community centre
  • Regular progress update leaflets distributed to all residents.

The project also featured a national design competition which attracted entries from 28 landscape architects, with the winning design selected by a judging panel involving local residents.

Improvements included the renovation of two existing ponds, making them more attractive and accessible for residents and local wildlife. Communal open spaces and community food growing projects were also created, alongside landscape improvements to the existing tree stock and shrub beds.

Sustaining the green spaces included resident involvement in a Green Team to review the management and maintenance approaches. It also provisded a of range of community events to encourage local people to utilise the improved facilities.
